Creative Design Can Save You Money
The rent house that we have now has a nice and spacious master bedroom. However, it needed some updates as well. The wall color was a dark teal with dark gray trim. I don’t hate the idea of a darker, bolder color in a large space or in a master bedroom, but the dark gray trim made the room feel dark and dated. Not to mention it looked as if a two-year-old grabbed a paint brush and splashed dark gray on sections of the walls.
I decided to brighten up the room with crisp white trim (which also makes the windows look bigger). By painting the dark gray trim a bright color, along with adding light colored furnishings you can use a darker wall color, which is exactly what we did.
Let’s start with some before pictures first to show you what I was working with.
I know! I know! It looks like a mess! To be fair, these pictures were taken our first weekend in this house. We didn’t have a laundry basket or hangers, and the mattress you see in the before pictures is an air mattress.
If you haven’t moved in a while, let me be the first to tell you, moving is expensive! We had a budget on renovating this property and used most of our budget to remodel and furnish the main rooms that are always seen. I had to be crafty and creative with this master bedroom remodel and I think we did pretty well!
Here are some after pictures.
Here is how I decorated on a budget. We already had all of the furniture. All we needed was paint, curtains, new throw pillows and a headboard. I already had the curtains from a previous project. I also painted the vanity white. Myself and a friend of mine found the bright pillows at Ross for a great price!
The biggest way that we cut cost was by making the headboard ourselves. From a previous project, we had extra white beadboard that we nailed to the wall above the bed. I went to Lowes and picked up the gray stained boards and used them to trim the headboard. This entire project cost $22!!! Have you looked at purchasing a headboard online or at a furniture store? The typical price that I’ve seen is $150-$500. I’ll take $22 headboard any day!
That's it for this post.
