Kitchen Makeover

Online pictures can say a thousand words, but until you see the house in person you really do not know what you are getting into. We saw pictures of our rent house online and thought it was a really cute house in a good neighborhood with is exactly what we wanted and exactly what we got. Great house and great neighborhood just needed some minor updates. The first viewing of the house, the first thing that I asked was can we paint.

While we were looking into renting houses we nicknamed this house the rainbow house. If you read my last post you know that we had to get rid of a spotty navy blue wall in the living room. Well, in the kitchen, we had several colors to get rid of. We had yellow and white shelves, dark gray cabinets, part of the kitchen wall was the same dark gray, the others were white and we had one entire section of upper and lower cabinets that were bright green. To top it all off, the countertops are a 50’s genre turquoise laminate formica.

I will say, I understand the thought process for all of the different colors in the kitchen. You can tell that the last tenant wanted to make the countertops appear less dated. The countertops are light turquoise but also have flecks of gold and gray in the pattern. So, if my assumptions are correct, they took the upper cabinet doors off to create open shelving and painted the upper shelves a bright yellow to match the flecks of gold in the countertops. They also painted one section of upper’s and lower’s a different shade of teal/green to match the countertops. The rest of the lower cabinets are gray to match the flecks of gray in the countertop pattern. If you have a similar situation going on at your house my suggestion would be, do not try so hard to match everything. Less is more.

We were approved to paint and update small things throughout the house, however, the countertops are here to stay. Knowing that we have a light turquoise that we need to work into some sort of color scheme, I knew to keep things as neutral as possible to utilize the countertop color as an accent color, rather than a scheme for the entire kitchen. We painted all of the walls a lighter shade of gray, and all of the cabinets a crisp white. The kitchen already had new floors, cabinet fixtures and a cute light above the sink, so paint was really all we needed.

Here are the after pictures!

One of my favorite things to do is find unique antiques and give them a purpose again. There are a few new itmes in these pictures, several of them came from garage sales, and some came from antique shops. What do you think of the end result?

Keep an eye out for another post coming soon!
